The Town of Washington seeks a motivated and hands-on Public Works Supervisor Trainee to assist in the supervision and operation of the town's water, sewer, and gas systems and street department operations. Key Responsibilities:
Supervision & Leadership:
· Assist in supervising and coordinating daily activities of public works staff.
· Train and mentor crew members in water, sewer, and gas operations as well as street operations.
· Ensure compliance with safety standards and municipal regulations.
Operations & Maintenance:
· Perform and oversee installation, maintenance, and repair of water distribution, sewer lines, and gas systems and street operations. Conduct inspections to ensure work meets specifications and regulatory standards.
· Respond to system alarms, leaks, and emergencies; perform necessary repairs.
Administrative Duties:
· Maintain accurate records of work performed, materials used, and staff time.
· Assist in preparing reports on work progress, staffing, and inventory.
· Requisition tools, equipment, and supplies as needed.
Field Work:
· Operate heavy machinery and specialized equipment (i.e., backhoe, etc.).
· Perform manual labor including trenching, pipe installation, valve repair, and street restoration.
· Participate in seasonal operations such as storm response and other emergency events.
Budgeting & Resource Management:
· Assist in preparing and managing budgets for public works operations.
· Track expenditures and recommend cost-saving measures.
· Maintain inventory of tools, equipment, and supplies.
Planning & Coordination:
· Assist in planning and scheduling maintenance and infrastructure projects.
· Coordinate with other departments, contractors, and utility providers.
· Monitor project timelines and resource allocation.
Customer Relations:
· Respond to public inquiries and service requests professionally and promptly.
· Communicate effectively with residents regarding service disruptions or repairs.
· Represent the department in community meetings or public forums as needed.
Regulatory Compliance:
· Ensure operations comply with local, state, and federal regulations.
· Maintain records and documentation required for audits and inspections.
· Stay current with changes in utility regulations and safety standards.
Qualifications:
· High school diploma or GED (technical training preferred).
· 2+ years of experience in public works, utilities, or construction.
· Valid driver's license.
· Ability to lift 50+ pounds and work in adverse weather conditions.
· Effective communication and problem-solving skills.
· Willingness to pursue certifications in water, sewer, and gas operations.
· Proficiency in computer applications related to public works operations.
· This role requires participation in on-call rotation, with a mandatory response time of 20 minutes during designated on-call hours.
