Industrial / Diesel Mechanic (Shipyard)
Position Title: Industrial / Diesel Mechanic
Location: Shipyard Facility
Reports To: Maintenance Supervisor / Yard Superintendent
Employment Type: Full-Time, Hourly
Position Summary
The Industrial/Diesel Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining diesel engines, heavy equipment, and industrial machinery used in shipyard operations. This position supports vessel construction and repair projects by ensuring that yard equipment, generators, cranes, forklifts, and marine engines are operating safely and efficiently.
Key Responsibilities
- Diagnose and repair diesel engines, hydraulic systems, and industrial equipment
- Perform preventative maintenance on heavy machinery and yard equipment
- Service marine diesel engines and auxiliary systems as required
- Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and fuel system issues
- Repair and maintain cranes, forklifts, man lifts, compressors, pumps, and generators
- Conduct inspections and identify worn or damaged components
- Replace parts such as injectors, pumps, belts, hoses, seals, and bearings
- Maintain accurate service and repair records
- Follow manufacturer specifications and shipyard safety procedures
- Respond to equipment breakdowns to minimize downtime
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- 3+ years of experience as a diesel or industrial mechanic (shipyard or heavy industrial preferred)
- Strong knowledge of diesel engines and hydraulic systems
- Ability to read and interpret service manuals and technical diagrams
- Experience with diagnostic tools and equipment
- Ability to weld or fabricate minor components (preferred)
- Valid driver’s license required
- Ability to pass a drug screening ( required)
Preferred Qualifications
- Marine diesel engine experience
- Experience working in a shipyard or maritime environment
- Technical or vocational training in diesel technology or industrial maintenance
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 75 lbs
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Ability to stand, bend, kneel, and climb for extended periods
- Comfortable working around heavy machinery and in confined spaces
Work Environment
- Industrial shipyard setting
- Exposure to loud noise, heavy equipment, fuel, oil, and industrial fluids
- Required use of PPE including hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, and steel-toe boots. Personal Flotation Devices (PFD), ear plugs, Fire Retardant Clothes (FRC)
