Utility Billing Clerk – Job Description
Position Overview
The Utility Billing Clerk is responsible for accurately preparing, processing, and maintaining customer utility accounts. This role ensures timely billing, payment collection, account adjustments, and high-quality customer service. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, organized, and comfortable working with financial data and customer inquiries.
Key Responsibilities
  • Maintain and update customer accounts, including new service setup, transfers, and disconnections.
  • Collect and post payments received via mail, online systems, and in person.
  • Generate reports related to billing, collections, delinquencies, and account activity.
  • Coordinate with field staff regarding meter readings, service orders, and account changes.
  • Assist customers in person, by phone, and by email with questions about bills, payments, and service policies.
  • Monitor delinquent accounts and follow established procedures for notices, penalties, and service shutoffs.
  • Maintain accurate records in accordance with organizational policies and state/local regulations.
  • Support general office operations, including filing, data entry, and administrative tasks.
  • Assist with research and resolve billing discrepancies, meter reading issues, and customer concerns.
 
 

Job Requirements

Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy when working with numbers.
  • Proficiency with office software (Outlook, Excel, Word) and billing or accounting systems.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
  • Strong organizational and time-management abilities.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in billing, accounting, finance, or administrative support.
  • Experience in municipal or utility billing.
  • Familiarity with meter reading systems or utility management software.
  • Knowledge of basic accounting principles.
Work Environment
  • Standard office setting with frequent customer interaction.
  • Requires extended periods of computer use
