Machinist
Position Title: Machinist
Location: Shipyard Facility
Reports To: Machine Shop Supervisor / Production Manager
Employment Type: Full-Time, Hourly
Position Summary
The Shipyard Machinist is responsible for machining, repairing, and fabricating precision metal components used in marine vessels and shipyard equipment. This role supports new construction, repair, and overhaul projects by operating manual and CNC machine tools to produce shafts, bushings, couplings, fittings, and other marine components to exact specifications.
Key Responsibilities
- Set up and operate manual lathes, milling machines, drill presses, and other shop equipment
- Machine shafts, keyways, bushings, pins, flanges, and custom marine parts
- Perform precision measurements using micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, and gauges
- Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and tolerances
- Repair worn or damaged vessel components and equipment parts
- Align and fit machined parts to meet marine and industrial specifications
- Maintain proper documentation of work performed
- Follow shipyard safety policies and quality control procedures
- Maintain clean and organized work area
- Operating small forklifts and overhead cranes
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- 3+ years of machinist experience (marine or heavy industrial preferred)
- Strong knowledge of machining principles, tolerances, and metal properties
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and mechanical drawings
- Experience with precision measuring tools
- Basic math skills including fractions, decimals, and geometry
- Ability to pass a drug screening (required)
Preferred Qualifications
- Marine propulsion shaft experience
- Experience with CNC programming and operation
- Experience working in a shipyard or maritime environment
- Technical or vocational training in machining technology
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
- Ability to stand for extended periods
- Ability to bend, kneel, and climb as needed
- Comfortable working in a noisy industrial environment
Work Environment
- Industrial shipyard machine shop
- Exposure to metal shavings, lubricants, loud noise, and heavy equipment
- Required use of PPE including safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, and steel-toe boots. (PFD) Personal Flotation Devices (FRC) Fire Retardant Clothes
